Think of meditation, especially mindfulness (or mindful meditation), as a way of sweeping all the unnecessary noise and junk thoughts out of the way and allowing you to pay attention to one thing at a time. Messy thoughts lead to a messy life. So the more you can strip away the chaotic, the better you’ll be a pinpointing what is useful and productive.

Before modern day, humankind had a fairly peaceful existence. No smartphones, no traffic jams, no advertisements. When you stepped outside, all you had was you,  your family, your village, and mother nature. It’s no wonder that so many people are taking a digital detox by descreening, unplugging, or disconnecting from their devices. Why? Because being perpetually plugged in is unnatural and abnormal.

Unfortunately, we have not learned to control our impulses around technology. And as a result, technology has taken us out of our natural rhythm of living. However, the silver lining is that meditation is a way of us reclaiming our minds and souls. With a daily diet of meditation, we can improve focus naturally and in a wholesome and organic fashion.How does meditation lengthen attention span? Meditation and attention are strongly linked. Think of it as an invisible network (or cosmic internet) that connects all of our minds, souls, and spirits. It’s what drives our intuition and instincts. Meditation allows for deeper more meaningful connections. An analogy could be made for finally ‘seeing the Matrix’ which was once hidden from the casual observer. After repeated and consistent meditation sessions, life begins to take on a different meaning. Your perception of your day-to-day begins to change. A calm demeanor overtakes you. You approach life differently. You now have a broader more mindful understanding of our existence.You’re less likely to be jarred, shaken up, or thrown off of your game. You can separate and make distinctions that you didn’t normally make. You can also make mental associations that you may have previously overlooked. Your brain activity and thought processes are more fluid. You can compartmentalize more easily, while at the same time establish connections that you normally wouldn’t deduce.Memory is improved because you have a stronger set of connections within the brain. You don’t have to spend as much brain power listening and memorizing because the mind naturally picks up on the details without stress or struggle. Concentration becomes easier, natural even. You can pick up speech patterns more quickly, which allows you to learn new languages faster. Reading and comprehension becomes smoother and easier to intake new information.

Generally you’ll notice that you are more clever individual. Scientific studies have purported that regular meditation will hike your IQ levels by 20 points (or perhaps more) thereby increasing your intelligence. Many studies show increased neuroplasticity, which means that the brain is more flexible because it has a higher number of connections and gray matter.

All of the above benefits can occur over time with repeated and consecutive meditation sessions. The benefits of meditation are received cumulatively, instead of all at once. This allows for a gradual yet lasting change. To see the positive effects and advantages you need to be willing to work through a ‘slow build’.

Effects Of Meditation On The Mind

One of the added benefits of doing meditation are the meditation effects on mind. The advantages of meditation when it comes to mindfulness and health is better sleep hygiene. By enabling the mind to travel through cognitive processes more fully, it allows for a better, more complete and deeper sleep. With the aid of using a meditation for a healthy body and mind, we are able to take advantage of its benefits without having to modify our sleep habits.

There are some noted unusual benefits of meditation (or out of the ordinary spiritual benefits of meditation), meditation benefits for health that show the effects of meditation on the mind, such as reduced stress, a more relaxed approach to life, and better cognitive performance and working memory. For the length of time that a person is in a meditation, s/he is in a relaxed, distraction-free state. This state of mind is similar to what early humankind’s civilizations and societies have experienced. Mimicking this type of scenario is very healthy for our minds and general wellbeing. Stepping out in nature also allows for this serene and calm mood. The more we can remove digital devices from our daily lives and the more we can enter this peaceful frame of mind, the closer we will be to spiritual awakening and ascension.

How To Improve Your Focus Using Meditation

With meditation, it’s important to be patient with yourself. Trust in the process and continue making daily progress in your mediation practice. Many will not see immediate effects, as they shouldn’t. If you’ve only just started meditating or learning how to meditate daily for beginners, then expect the changes to be moderate and gradual.Also don’t expect to see a change during the meditation itself. The effects of meditation are often shown after the meditation itself. Often the realizations occur throughout your day-to-day. Because you spend most of your day in a certain rhythm undergoing your routine, the meditation will allow you see the routine differently. This is where the magic of meditation begins to reveal itself.By maintaining consistency in your meditation practice and by meditating across several days in a row (consecutively) with plenty of restful recuperative sleep in between, you will begin to notice profound effects. Sleep is a necessary ingredient in the meditation process. It will facilitate the ability to make new distinctions and discoveries with every new day.

Sit in a quiet, isolated area with absolutely no distractions. No digital devices. No alarm clocks. No pets. No spouses or roommates. Your aim to make sure that nothing could enter the room, interrupt, or break your focus.

If you can control the light in the room, dim the lights to where you cannot fully make out what’s in front of you. Or if it’s safe, turn them off completely. It’s always better to meditate early morning (after waking) or right before bed, when sunlight is minimal and easier to control. Of course, a good set of blackout blinds or blackout curtains never hurt.

Place your smartphone or devices in another room (and shut them down or turn them completely off). You don’t want them to interrupt you in the middle of your session. If you have an RFID bag, or some sort of Faraday box, then all the better. This will ensure that you don’t receive phone calls when in deep meditation.

Find a location on the floor. Sit cross-legged (if possible). If not, find a stool or a backless chair (so as to not to encourage you to lean back). Sit with your back straight. Close your eyes. And breath only slightly deeper than a normal sized breath. Do this for a measured count: 5…4…3…2…1. Breath in and breath out to the count you choose. Do this for 5 mins. And you’re done.
